Education and Strategic Marketing

4th June 2024 saw the EMIG HR group meet and our Managing Director & Lead Consultant, David Browne, present having been invited by the Chair of the Group, Dr Jim Golby.

We love our marketing, commercial and go-to-market projects but we are always open to supporting and educating others. We did a session in a local school on the pharma industry and gained the engagement of around 30 youngsters. Talking to this group of HR professionals was a good test of Einstein’s wise words, “if you can’t explain it simply, you don’t know it well enough!”

To make it interesting, David avoided jargon and technicalities and focused on high level points.

To make it relevant, skills that a strategic marketer would need were highlighted – useful for HR teams recruiting such people as permanent hires, contractors or consultants.

Real world examples make it live.

There were two examples, here is the first: We explained the Challenge which was a European Launch and along the way highlighted some commercial lessons and called out key skills and knowledge in the speech bubbles.

Having shown the thought process and logic and our Actions ….

We firstly showed the decisions that the work informed and then explained the logic behind it, using the analogy of a falling line of dominoes and the fact that
gravity works only one way …. Down!

What are challenges and actions without results! We shared the outcomes and …. Important to this group, the skills needed to be effective:

Example two was a little different, a Global Strategy Review:

The outputs from the project were powerful and explained concisely. For the HR group we again highlighted key skills and knowledge needed for this role.

Jargon, like positioning, was explained and we find that using everyday examples (as with the supermarkets shown here) is helpful. In this case Waitrose will always be “Quality” and Asda “Every little helps”. To the mind, those positions are mutually exclusive!

This group of HR professionals found it interesting and useful as we set out in out session objectives. Of course, we enjoyed doing it!

We have talked to innovation hubs about building commercial knowledge in their founders who are often world-leading scientists but newer to running a business.
